How Tell If Your Pet Needs Emergency Care

Blog

Having a pet can be overwhelming sometimes. There are times when your pet may not be feeling well and this can cause you a lot of stress as a pet owner. Sometimes it can be confusing to know what constitutes an emergency with your pet.

You may not know when you should get emergency care or when you should wait it out. Here are some signs you need to take your vet to emergency care.

Weakness in Legs

If your dog is too weak to stand then you need to take them to the doctor immediately. The inability to stand may mean that their heart is failing, they have low blood sugar, or internal bleeding.

However, these are just a few of the many reasons why your dog may be unable to stand. The best thing to do is to take your dog in for an examination as soon as you can.

Blood Loss

If your dog is experiencing severe blood loss there's no way around it except to take them to the vet immediately. Wounds that are gushing blood uncontrollably need to be dealt with immediately.

When blood is gushing from a wound, it usually means that an artery has been punctured. Put pressure on the wound immediately using a sterile piece of cloth. Get your dog to emergency care as soon as possible. Too much blood loss can be fatal.

Shaking and Seizures

When your dog starts having seizures this can be very nerve-wracking, and understandably so. If you notice that your dog is jerking uncontrollably, you need to take them to the vet for emergency care.

It could be that there are organs in their bodies that are shutting down or they may be having an epileptic seizure. Whatever the case, seizures, even ones that only jerk your dog minimally, need to be dealt with as soon as possible.

Vomiting

When your dog vomits it is not always an emergency. If your dog only vomits once and does not vomit again for the rest of the day, then they may just have had an upset stomach.

However, if your dog is vomiting for more than a few hours it is a sign that you need to take them in for emergency veterinary care. Vomiting can dehydrate your dog very quickly. If the vomiting is accompanied by diarrhea this can be even more detrimental, your dog will need to get emergency care.
